Daily Summary for 9/27/2024
Driving through the aftermath of Hurricane Helene
Big Rig Steve officially done at 6:30 pm safely parked near Love’s Rincon, Georgia.
Big Rig Travels broadcast day began at 9:42 am near Madison, Georgia at the Love’s. Cloudy start to the day. First thing BRS advises is getting a CAT scale to verify we are good. We were perfectly legal. BRS advised that it rained a lot but luckily no high winds last night.
Lights on, seat belt fastened, 10:00 am, rolling back on to I-20 east, continuing our trip to Rincon, GA.
At 10:49 am, BRS passed a big rig which was broken down in the hammer lane. Steve noted that he was starting to see more big trees on the side of the road. A big rig had run over a tree and had stalled at 10:51 am.
“Wow, wow, check this out, right lane is covered with downed trees. Look at this mess.”
Traffic stoppage at 11:00 am due to the mess and squeezing into one lane.
We exit off of I-20 onto I-520 at 12:19 pm near Augusta, GA. At 12:26 pm, we exit off of I-520 and Steve advises, “ok let’s do some backroads.” Only to find out there are power lines down, blocking us from proceeding, so we end up being forced back onto I-520, except in the opposite direction. Steve stops at 12:31 pm on the side of I-520 to review alternative options under the current conditions. BRS determines to stay on big roads. Steve is able to find a spot to turn around after we crossed I-20 again and we ended up back on I-520 going towards Columbia, SC.
Welcome to South Carolina at 1:04 pm near North Augusta, SC.
We roll back onto I-20 at 1:22 pm as we continue towards Columbia, SC.
Stopped at the Love’s at 3:03 pm, then we were welcomed back to Georgia at 5:58 pm on I-95 south.
