One of the coolest parts of our Southwest adventure happened yesterday when we hopped aboard the historic Grand Canyon Railway in Williams, Arizona, for a ride to one of America’s most amazing natural wonders.
The day started at the depot in Williams, and the atmosphere was already buzzing. Before boarding, musicians played live western and cowboy tunes, giving everything a fun Old West feel. The depot was packed with excited travelers, cameras snapping, and everyone looking forward to the trip.
For our ride to the canyon, we grabbed seats in the Dome View Car called Coconino. The elevated dome seating gave us awesome views of northern Arizona as the train rolled through forests, grasslands, and wide-open landscapes. Along the way, musicians wandered through the train playing live music, which made the experience even more enjoyable.
As we headed north, we started noticing clouds building in the distance. What began as a few scattered clouds gradually turned into darker storm clouds as we got closer to the Grand Canyon. By the time we arrived, a light drizzle had started.
Unfortunately, we had left our rain gear behind.
Luckily, the rain stayed light enough that it didn’t put much of a damper on exploring. We had about three hours to take everything in, and it was worth every minute. Even under cloudy skies, the Grand Canyon was absolutely stunning. Honestly, the changing weather created some incredible lighting and shadows throughout the canyon, making for some fantastic views and photos.
Before long, it was time to make our way back to the station for the return trip to Williams.
This time we rode First Class in the Grandview car. The comfortable seats, refreshments, and laid-back atmosphere made for a great ride home. But Mother Nature wasn’t quite done with us yet.
The storm had picked up, and lightning flashed in the distance as we traveled south. About thirty minutes into the trip, the train suddenly came to a stop.
We soon found out why.
A tree had apparently been struck during the storm, starting a small brush fire near the tracks. Crew members jumped into action and headed toward the scene. Everyone on board watched as railroad personnel worked to check things out and make sure everything stayed safe.
Once local brush fire crews arrived and took over, the all-clear was given, and we were soon back on our way to Williams.

In 2015, our first trip to the Grand Canyon we drove our vehicle. Then our next trip to the Canyon we took the train. We had a fun ride to and from. One way we had the Dome top, picture, refreshments and a chance for them to take our picture. LOL, Ray and I did even break their camera! The other way there was a robbery, Ray even played along with the actors, and then Ray had a Service Dog snoozing on his foot. I am so glad Steve, and family had this great adventure. It is a cherished treasure for your scrapbook!
