My First Metra Train Adventure: Joliet to Chicago

One of the best parts of this new RV lifestyle is having the freedom to explore places I’ve driven past for years but never had the chance to truly experience. Over Memorial Day weekend, I set out on a memorable adventure that combined RV camping, public transportation, and a day of exploring downtown Chicago.
My journey began at the Love’s RV Stop in Morris, Illinois. It was my first time camping there, and it proved to be a convenient and comfortable base camp for the weekend. On Memorial Day, I hopped into my 2025 Ford Maverick and made the short drive to the Metra station in Joliet.
This was my very first ride on Metra, and I have to say, it was a great experience. Instead of dealing with Chicago traffic and expensive parking, I was able to sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride into the city. As the train rolled north toward downtown, I found myself looking out the window and appreciating the changing scenery, but I really was disappointed by the green window tint they had on the windows!
Once I arrived in Chicago, my first destination was the Museum of Broadcast Communications. As someone who spends a lot of time creating live content and connecting with viewers through BigRigTravels, touring the museum was especially interesting. Seeing the history of radio and television broadcasting gave me a new appreciation for how far communications technology has come over the years.
After the museum tour, I headed over to one of Chicago’s most famous landmarks—The Bean in Millennium Park. The park was full of people enjoying the beautiful Memorial Day weather. Of course, I had to stop and take in the reflections of the city skyline while snapping a few photos.
By lunchtime, I ventured into Chicago’s Pedway system, an underground network of walkways connecting parts of downtown. It was a fascinating place to explore and a great way to escape the crowds while grabbing a bite to eat. After lunch, I spent several more hours wandering through downtown Chicago, taking in the sights, sounds, and energy of the city.
As the afternoon came to an end, I made my way back to the train station and boarded Metra for the return trip to Joliet. The ride back gave me time to reflect on what had been a wonderful day. From camping at Love’s RV Stop in Morris, to riding Metra for the first time, touring the Museum of Broadcast Communications, visiting The Bean, and exploring downtown Chicago, it was the perfect Memorial Day adventure.
Sometimes the best adventures don’t require driving across the country. They’re waiting just down the road, ready to be discovered.
This first Metra trip was definitely a success, and I have a feeling there will be many more train adventures in my future.
Until next time…
Keep exploring, keep adventuring, and keep enjoying the good life!
